Calcium sulfate is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula CaSO4. It is a white, odourless, tasteless powder that is slightly soluble in water. Calcium sulfate is found naturally as the mineral gypsum. It is also produced commercially by heating gypsum to drive off water. It has a variety of uses, including: Plaster of Paris (paste is used to make casts and molds), as a major component of Drywall, as a fertilizer in agriculture to improve soil quality, in water treatment to remove impurities from water and also in a variety of other products, including paint, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. Calcium sulfate is generally safe for most people when consumed in moderation. However, it can cause side effects such as constipation and diarrhoea in some people. Calcium sulfate can also interact with certain medications.
